Hunted
Prologue
My name is Edward. I hope someone is reading this because if you are, the human race may have survived. I don’t know who you are or how you acquired my journal but know this just the fact that your reading this may mean that the impossible has happened we may have killed the Vampires, but then again it’s possible that all of this is in my head, and I’m locked up in a cell somewhere getting pumped up with hallucinogens making all of this seem real. Writing this so called journal on the wall in a cell, but the fact is the world is decaying more and more while the last survivors, are trying to live day by day because day by day is all they can hope for.
I’m going to get to the point. The year is 2040. The reason I’m telling you the year is because like I said before I don’t know when or how you found my journal. The quick version is that the entire world was in denial they thought all of the legends about Vampires were fake even when the proof of their existence was right in their face and…. occasionally drinking our blood.
We thought all of the legends were fiction we thought wrong there was a break out of the vampirism virus in the year 2034. During the beginning several different religious groups held mass suicides. Claiming that the apocalypse was upon us, in my opinion I think this would all be easier if we all followed their example.
All major cities lost power within two weeks of the infection, the buildings with generators kept power for at as long as they could get gas, the world economy was in tatters, police forces and military hung on for longer than anyone could have hoped for, both the military and the police were in working order for four years in hopes that their daytime efforts would put a dent in the Vampires ranks, and help the last survivors, survive.
Anarchy overran the entire world people stole anything and everything trying to survive, the vampires soon picked off people until only the skilled or lucky survived.
The people who survived made several barricaded compounds that were scattered around the world. The locations were secret to all but the people who originally came from each individual compound so that there was a very little chance of survivors being followed by vampires when they tried to find the compounds.
The compounds were usually built in secluded areas, so that they were out of the way of big cities.
If the past Humans were even a little observant they would have seen the evidence it was everywhere you just had to look. Legends tell of vampires in a lot of cultures under different names but the principal is the same, the Native American Windego which is believed to be a starved under nourished vampire that eventually results in cannibalism and mutates further by getting almost constantly bitten by other Windegos mutating it even farther making it more unrecognizable than the modern day vampire, Spanish tell of a green imp type blood sucker called a Chupicapra scientists now believe that it was infected with a rare strain of the Vampire virus and mutated, making it more silent but not as strong so its prey is mostly livestock, and even the werewolf it is possible that a vampire got desperate and tried to take a wolf but the wolf possibly got away and in a one in a million chance slowly changed into the modern day Werewolf.
So you see, with all of these different types of vampires our chance is pretty slim to actually win but we can always hope even though the sad truth is that on the day of breakout there was an average of eight billion people in the world only about five percent of the world’s population survived. That means that there are only about four hundred million people who were not Vampires, four hundred million may sound like a lot but that’s only about the population of California before the outbreak, and that’s before we started getting hunted.
Chapter One:
Rude Awakening
A howl cut into the night waking me in a cold sweat my eyes shot open scanning the surrounding forest. The low throaty howl of the vampire perhaps vampires racked my body making it feel like an inferno was let of on my insides. The pain was so intense I almost blacked out the edges of my vision was tinged with red. I could feel my adrenaline going into overdrive allowing the pain to slow to a dull throbbing, no one knows why the howl of a vampire make our bodies feel like fire, probably from centuries of evolving being afraid of the species.
Another howl made me remember where I was I started scanning the forest again what little light that was coming from the moon allowed me to make out shapes going so fast they merged together looking like a hulking mass of writhing body parts. I could hear there breathing slow and steady, sounding like unending waves crashing on the face of a cliff.
The sound of there breathing was hypnotic and strangely calming almost as If all of my worries were taken away, their breathing increasing in tempo slowly gaining subst
